What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions prevent you from getting enough oxygen and force the body to wake up to regain normal breathing, making it difficult to enter the deeper stages of sleep. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea. It typically occurs when the muscles in the throat relax, blocking airflow. It may also be caused by improper tongue position, causing it to fall back into the throat and obstruct your airways. When you can’t breathe, it signals your brain to wake you up to reopen the airway. This is typically so brief that you don’t remember, but it can prevent you from getting restful sleep.
  • Central Sleep Apnea is when the brain fails to deliver the proper signals to the muscles to the muscles that control breathing. For a brief period, you may stop breathing entirely. This can cause you to wake up feeling short of breath and make it difficult to fall or stay asleep.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

You or your child may have sleep apnea without realizing it. Sleep apnea usually causes daytime sleepiness in adults, while children are more likely to develop behavioral problems. One of the main and most noticeable symptoms of sleep apnea is chronic loud snoring caused by the vibrations of your relaxed throat muscles. Some other warning signs and symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Irritability or trouble concentrating

To evaluate you for sleep apnea, our team will invite you to our office for a sleep study. We will discuss your symptoms and concerns and then provide you with a ring device you will wear for three nights. This ring connects to an app that will provide us with accurate information about your sleep. We partner with a pulmonologist who will examine your results. Once you’ve received a diagnosis, we will review the results with you and design a suitable treatment plan.

The Importance Of Treating Sleep Apnea

Because sleep apnea prevents you from getting a good night’s rest, it can leave you feeling exhausted, even if you don’t remember waking up during the night. Without treatment, it can be impossible to feel fully rested. The long-term consequences of sleep apnea can cause issues similar to chronic sleep deprivation, leading to decreased motivation, difficulty concentrating, and even depression.

  • Heart and cardiovascular disease: Frequently waking up at night and having decreased oxygen levels puts stress on the body, increasing your risk for heart attacks, heart disease, and heart failure.
  • High blood pressure: Not getting restful sleep and having lowered blood oxygen levels makes it difficult for your body to properly regulate hormones needed to control stress and metabolism functions. This results in high blood pressure, which is also the leading risk factor for strokes.
  • Diabetes: Not getting enough oxygen makes you more likely to develop insulin resistance, increasing the levels of glucose in your bloodstream. This leads to high blood sugar and the potential to develop type 2 Diabetes.
  • Poor growth and cognitive development in children: Children especially need rest to support their growing brains and bodies. Poor sleep due to sleep apnea can hinder your child’s immune system and prevent the brain from sorting and storing information, leading to poor memory or difficulty learning.

Our team will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan that works best for your needs and lifestyle. This could include using devices such as a Vivos® appliance, CPAP or CPAP alternative, or a nightguard, and long-term support such as myofunctional therapy.
